Shoulder impingement is characterized by pain in the shoulder when lifting your arm above your head. At a certain range of motion there is more pain, typically between 90 degrees and 120 degrees of shoulder abduction. This is called the “painful arc of motion”. Shoulder impingement does not require surgical intervention and can be treated very well with physical therapy.
